HISTORY

“Kukai puts on contemporary shows based upon traditional Basque dance, making its own unique creations and cooperating with prestigious choreographers.”

Kukai Dantza is a company that was created and currently resides in, Errenteria (Gipuzkoa). It was created on the initiative of dancer Jon Maya Sein in the year 2001. Kukai undertakes contemporary creation based upon traditional Basque dance while promoting encounters with other artistic languages and dance styles.

The company started out with a brief choreography entitled “Deiadarra”. Since then, it has managed to undertake artistic projects which entail different lines of work. For example, the company’s close relationship with Tanttaka Teatroa has brought about the creation of several stage projects with a very characteristic language. Likewise, in the year 2008, a new creative path was undertaken by inviting international choreographers to the company. Thus, Kukai Dantza has carried out very respectable projects with choreographers such as Marcos Morau, Cesc Gelabert, Sharon Fridman, La Intrusa Danza, Ione San Martin, etc. Noteworthy is the company’s ability to adapt to languages, spaces, and special events — carrying out artistic work in spaces and contexts related with film, architecture, fashion, gastronomy, etc. It is worthwhile to highlight the numerous cooperative efforts that Kukai Dantza has undertaken with remarkable musicians: Oreka Tx, Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi, Carlos Nuñez, Iñaki Salvador, Juan Mari Beltran.

Kukai Dantza has received numerous awards throughout its existence.
Max Best Dance Show 2017, Max Best Dance Ensemble 2015 and 2017, Umore Azoka Leioa Award of Honour 2016, Best Dance Show of the Huesca Theatre and Dance Fair 2014 and 2016, Special Mention in the Street Arts Festival of Valladolid, San Sebastian Award for Theatre…

As the dance company resides in Errenteria, it is responsible for a public awareness raising and audience creation project alongside the municipality’s City Hall. In terms of its social activity, it carries out dance-based integration, education, and solidarity projects.
